How to use Placeholder Image

Free placeholder image tool: pick width, height, colors, and a label, then download a clean box for mockups.

  1. Open Placeholder Image on toolpermarket, then enter the values you want to work with.

  2. In the Dimensions field, set width and height in pixels. Common sizes are 400 by 300 or 600 by 400.

  3. In the Colors / label field, pick background, text color, and a label. Use the size as the label for quick mockups.

  4. Press Generate to compute the result. The output appears immediately below the form. Tweak any field and run it again to check a different scenario.

  5. Read the result and use it as needed. If the number looks off, re-check your inputs and run it again — the math is deterministic, so the same entries always return the same answer.

Worked example. A 400 by 300 box in brand blue with white text reads 400 x 300, ready to drop into a layout.

Tips for accurate results.

  • Match the aspect ratio of the real image it stands in for.

  • Use neutral colors so it does not distract.

  • Regenerate whenever the mock size changes.

When to use Placeholder Image. Filling image slots in a wireframe or mockup. Reserving space before real assets arrive. Showing layout proportions without final art.

When you actually reach for this

  • You are laying out a design or a site and need a stand-in block of a given size.
  • You want a labeled dummy image while real assets are missing.

Where this tool stops being accurate

  • A placeholder is a stand-in, not real content; swap in the final asset before shipping.
  • Dimensions and label are exactly what you set; it carries no real photo data.

Frequently asked questions

Is the placeholder image generated locally?

Yes. The box is drawn on the canvas with your chosen dimensions and colors and exported as a PNG entirely in the browser. There is no upload and no external image involved, so you can create as many sizes as you need instantly.

Should I use this in production?

It is meant for design and prototyping, not as a final asset. A placeholder communicates layout and size, but you should swap in a real, optimized image before publishing so visitors get meaningful content and faster loads.

Can I change the text shown on the box?

The label field lets you type anything, and the default shows the width and height you set. This makes it easy to mark which slot a placeholder represents, which is handy when a mockup has several different-sized image areas.

Is the placeholder a real image I can ship?

It is a dummy meant for layout. Replace it with the actual asset before publishing; it only shows size and label.
