How to use Punycode Converter
Encode or decode international domain names with Punycode.
- Enter a Unicode domain label, or an xn-- Punycode string.
- Choose encode to get the IDNA form, or decode to read a Punycode label back.
- Press Run to convert between the two forms.
Practical note. Type a Unicode domain label such as 例子.测试 and the converter returns its xn-- form, exactly as DNS software expects it.
When you actually reach for this
- You have an internationalized domain (with accents or non-Latin script) and need its ASCII/punycode form for DNS.
- You are checking whether a suspicious "unicode" domain is actually a look-alike of a real ASCII domain.
Where this tool stops being accurate
- Punycode only encodes the domain labels, not the path; the rest of the URL stays as-is.
- It does not detect homograph attacks — xn-- examples can still visually impersonate a brand using similar glyphs.
Frequently asked questions
What does Punycode Converter do?
Encode or decode international domain names with Punycode.
Why does my domain start with xn-- after conversion?
That prefix marks a punycode (ACE) label, which is how DNS stores internationalized domains in pure ASCII. It is normal and required for such domains.
Can punycode tell me if a domain is a spoof?
No — it only encodes; you must compare the decoded script against known brands and watch for confusable characters.
